Take Control of Your Notes

Updated: Apr 21

Post-it™ notes are a popular tool for taking quick notes and reminders, but they can also be a source of clutter and distraction. If you find yourself using post-it notes to the point where they are taking over your workspace, it may be time to consider other options.

Here are a few reasons why you might want to avoid post-it notes:

  • They can be messy. If you're not careful, post-it notes can quickly become scattered and unmanageable. This can make it difficult to find the information you need when you need it.

  • They can be distracting. If you're constantly seeing post-it notes around your workspace, it can be difficult to stay focused on your work. The bright colours and catchy messages can be a major distraction.

  • They can be wasteful. Post-it notes are made from paper, which is a non-renewable resource. If you're not using them carefully, you're contributing to the waste problem.

  • You can lose them. Post-it notes are not meant to be a permanent note. The longer they’re around, the more likely they’ll lose their stickiness, get knocked from their resting place, or even glue themselves to other things. You simply can’t depend on them being where you left them!

If you're looking for a more sustainable and efficient way to take notes, there are a few alternatives to post-it notes that you might want to consider:

  • Digital notes. There are a number of apps and websites that allow you to take digital notes. This can be a more efficient way to take notes, as you can easily search for and organise them.

    • Evernote is a popular note taking app that allows you to take notes, annotate documents, and create to-do lists. It also has a web clipper that allows you to save articles from the web.

    • Google Keep is a free note taking app that allows you to take notes, create to-do lists, and set reminders. It also has a widget that allows you to quickly take notes from your home screen.

    • Microsoft OneNote is a note taking app that allows you to take notes, organise them into notebooks, and share them with others. It also has a built-in search function that makes it easy to find the information you need.

    • Apple Notes is a note taking app that comes pre-installed on iOS devices. It allows you to take notes, annotate documents, and create to-do lists. It also has a built-in search function that makes it easy to find the information you need.

    • Standard Notes is a note taking app that focuses on simplicity and security. It allows you to take notes, organise them into folders, and encrypt them.

    • Obsidian is a note taking app that is designed for note taking and knowledge management. It allows you to create a graph of your notes, and it has a powerful search function.

    • Joplin is a note taking app that is designed for note taking and journaling. It allows you to take notes, organise them into notebooks, and encrypt them.

  • Voice notes. If you're on the go, you can use your voice to take notes. This can be a convenient way to jot down quick ideas or reminders.

  • Notepads. If you prefer to take notes by hand, you can use a notepad. This can be a more sustainable option than post-it notes, as you can recycle or reuse the notepad when you're finished with it.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to use post-it notes is up to you. If you find them to be helpful and productive, then there's no need to give them up. However, if you find that they're more of a hindrance than a help, then there are a number of other options available.
